A Reflection to Share
Preparation: Fill a grocery bag with various foods. Fill a large trash bag with newspaper--so it bulges! In a small lacquer bowl place 2 ounces of uncooked rice.
We take food for granted in this country, eating almost six pounds of food a day per person. (Hold up the grocery bag) Food is so plentiful that the average person in the U.S. throws away almost 500 pounds of food a year. (Hold up garbage bad) But much of the world is not so lucky. 840 million people are chronically hungry --about one of every seven people in the world. Wasting food would be like wasting life to them. And in times of drought, war, or natural disaster they may hardly have any food at all. In those desperate circumstances this two-ounce bowl of rice (hold up the bowl of rice) could be the only food they would know for an entire day. And yet this represents less than 1/10 of the amount necessary to meet minimal nutritional standards. How long could you last if this was all you had to eat? How long will we go on allowing people to suffer the lack of this most basic need when there is enough food for everyone?
Fortunately, through Crop Walks we can make a difference in the lives of hungry people at home and around the world. The funds raised by Crop Walks provide emergency food and other supplies in the most desperate situations, as well as supporting impoverished people with the tools they need to build a more stable life. The problem of hunger seems huge, but each of us walking together in the Crop Walk can make a real, lasting difference. www.churchworldservice.org
I have never gone a day in my life where I could not obtain access to food if I wanted or even needed it. Try imagining yourself in a place where not only are your cupboards bare but so are every one else's within walking distance. This is not a fair world that we are living in.
The best is yet to come,
