I wish you could see my face right now. My jaw is hanging WIDE open right now. I was listening to a Katy Perry song on youtube and some of her bio came up. Katy freakin Perry was originally a gospel artist! I just think it's so wild that the now famous "tongue-in-cheek" artist was beltin out tunes for the Lord until the record label closed and she hit it big else where.
A former Christian artist, Katy Perry re-branded herself as a larger-than-life pop star and rose to prominence during the summer of 2008. Before she topped the charts with songs like "I Kissed a Girl" and "California Gurls," though, she spent the better part of a decade recording music under a different name. Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (or Katy Hudson, as she billed herself on her 2001 gospel album) was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, CA. Raised in a religious household as the daughter of two pastors, she was forbidden to listen to secular bands as a child, although a childhood slumber party introduced her to the music of Alanis Morissette and Freddie Mercury. Religious music remained at the forefront, however, and Katy released a self-titled Christian album in 2001 under her original name. She would later abandon the genre (and her given surname) in favor of a pop career.
Ahhh! It's not that I'm judging her for switching, I just struggling to juxtapose to two Katy's especially given the subject matter of her former and current songs. She couldn't have hated Christian music if she pursued a career in it for so many years...right? Now I am really interested. Katy Perry has made it to number 2 on my Let's Have Lunch celebrity list. Below Carrie Underwood and above Channing Tatum (haha). A lot of people change their minds about their careers or their passions but it's not recorded for public display. The only thing that makes her story different or special is that the whole world knows it all instead of just her family. Nonetheless the facts are still the same...
"...for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable." Romans 11:29
So I see Carrie and I see Katy and it helps show me that you can never predict how your life will turn out. In 5 years a whirlwind transformation can happen. Hopefully it's one that you want. Because with that I'm reminded of the thousands of other people in this world who are like my father. 5 years ago you had a steady job with benefits, 401k retirement money, and your mother was still alive.
Today--I'm still alive, I'm so alive and I don't appreciate that enough. So much can happen so quickly--maybe I'm too young to grasp that yet, but I do believe in miracles. I believe in realized dreams and I believe in heartache.
The best is yet to come,
~Adwoa
