What's in a Name?

So when I first heard friends passing thoughts about the idea of "naming the year" I thought it was silly. I thought what's the point and what's really going to come out of that. I guess I should also mention that I don't believe in "New Year's Resolutions". I'm only a skeptic because I don't see why you set yourself up for unrealistic goals and then proceed to fall short of achieving them a day, a week, or a month later. Do you really feel better about yourself then? I'm as convinced that "New Year's Resolutions" are productive as I am that you can earn interest by burying money into the ground.

One day as I was driving home from work thinking about the long hours I'd just put in, I decided that I need to get serious about committing myself to 8 hours per day. Part of getting the most out of 8 hours in the work day means committing to 8 hours of sleep each night. And you've got to love math because that leaves me with exactly 8 more hours to do whatever else I'd like to do with the day. The point in the intentionality is that I get to chose how to spend the remaining 8. It can be time in church, reading, blogging, eating meals, preparing for grad school, movies, exercise, anything!

This seems very simple and obvious but I've never had a firm revelation of how to hold myself accountable to balance in such a tangible way. The hard part is that my 8 hours of flex time are scattered about at the beginning, middle, and end of my day. However, if I choose glass half full, my 8 hours of flex time can be used and celebrated in whatever way is most convenient. I just have to keep up with them and not let the minutes slip away into hours.

Today, I heard some very reaffirming words come through my radio:

I'm in a hurry to get things done
Oh I rush and rush until life's no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I'm in a hurry and don't know why
--Alabama, I'm In a Hurry

Who wants to rush and rush until life's no fun?!?

So as we say goodbye to 2011 and usher in 2012, I will raise my glass and make a toast to The Year of Balanced Thirds!

The best is yet to come,

(For the full story about naming the year here is the blog. I didn't actually read the whole thing, maybe that's why I had my own epiphany, let me know what you think about it http://daphnedel.com/post/13790989386/choosing-to-name-your-year)
