Freedom Fries

I'm sorry what are Freedom Fries? [insert my confused blank stare]
One minute later... wait are those the same as French Fries?
30 seconds later... seriously is this from after 9/11?
15 seconds later... people still call them that?
5 seconds later... oh boy, that's a problem

Below is the comment that caused the above reaction (someone listed their favorite foods online):

Favorite Food: Chinese, Burgers, Freedom Fries

I did a little research just to be sure I wasn't mistaken and it only got worse. The freedom craze got its start here in good ole' North Carolina.
The renaming movement began in February 2003, with Beaufort, North Carolina "Cubbie's" restaurant owner Neal Rowland, who was motivated from similar actions against Germany in World War I, when sauerkraut was called "liberty cabbage," and frankfurters were renamed "hot dogs."[3][4] In an interview about the name change, Rowland commented "since the French are backing down [from the war], French fries and French everything needs to be banned."[5] In March 2007, Rowland obtained a trademark registration for the term "freedom fries"
And just to be sure I wasn't missing anything and that these are the same tasty delectable slivers of fried potato... I looked for a picture

^ yup same thing.

The best is yet to come,

  1. I remember Freedom Fries. What a joke! Glad "liberty cabbage" didn't stick.
