For the most part I could consider myself a fan of comic book to big screen movies; especially Marvel comics. I didn't know much about Captain America before the recent film but now I can say I am a fan. The thing that resonates most with me about his character is that he was the weakest of the weak and a sickly guy. He was small and by all odds should have been destined to sit on the sidelines. He was rejected time and time again from his dream but he never gave up. Then basically out of pity they gave him a chance to show what he could do.
We live our lives and often dream about opportunity coming our way. But what will we do today if that opportunity makes itself real? You can't become something overnight that you haven't been all your life. You can't develop a skill that you haven't been crafting with hours and hours of practice.
You have to live your life as if today is the day when you will be asked to demonstrate your ability.
The soon to be Captain America had heart. It's a cliche but I believe it to be true that you can't teach "heart". You can cultivate it and learn to be more generous, caring, compassionate, selfless, etc. but it's not a switch that you just turn on and off. When you have a heart that lives and breathes and beats for others it is apparent in everything you do. It is who you are and it shows itself unashamedly.
I'd been wanting to write a post for a while about the two things I'd like to be known for in my life. So even though this is a post about Captain America and service I'm going to slide my life goal in here as well :)
At the end of my life and for the time that I am walking on this earth I want to be known for making others feel LOVED and to feel KNOWN. Loved with the fullest display of love that I am capable of and when my limits fail, loved with the kind of love that is endless, never failing, and 100% unselfish. "I love because He first loved me" (1 John 4:19, replacement of plural "we" for singular "me"). If there is anything that you love about me, trust that is of no credit to myself but to my Heavenly Father who taught me how to love. The other thing I want to do with my life is to show love by acknowledging others and letting them know that they are known. Everything about your life matters and everything about who you are matters to me. It means something to be called by name and have someone look you in the eye and say you are worth saving!
What are you living your life for?
Here is the clip I've been alluding to that inspired this post.
I don't think I have that kind of heart yet (to jump on a grenade), but maybe one day I will. Why do you think I adopted my tagline below:
The best is yet to come,
