This post is dedicated to my friend Holly "Holly Jolly" Mueller.
You don't earn the nickname Holly Jolly simply by having yuletide as your favorite holiday. It was be an oxymoron to call a grumpy person jolly. So it you don't know Holly trust me, she is deserving of the nickname.
Holly is one of a handful of people I've met in my life who I put in the category of "gifted at being a friend". There are a lot of great gifts out there. Gift of hospitality, gift of intelligence, gift of beauty, gift of kindness, gift of shrewdness, and so on. I've learned a lot from Holly since I met her in our commune, I mean intentional community, back in 2010.
Three of the things I observed are:
THOUGHTFULNESS goes a long way. Sometimes you won't ever see the end of how long it goes.
To be the best kind of friend, you need to be PRESENT. Somehow, even if she is faking it (Holly if you are, never tell me. Okay?) Holly to this day manages to be fully present when I talk with her face to face. She doesn't play with her phone like I do and isn't distracted by all the things she would rather be doing. Holly is also very hospitable, so that's just a bonus. Thanks for hosting me in Nashville (twice!)
Finally, I saw that it's okay to be SILLY. I struggle with this one more than the rest but I'm a work in progress.
Holly lost a dear friend recently. I never met her friend, but I heard about her from Holly. I deeply believe the saying "show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are". I know Holly and I know that Holly is a great friend, so that says a lot about the people who are great friends to her.
The idea to write this blog post came last week when I was looking for a cd to play in my car. Don't judge me I love cd's and radio! Anyway I found a gem called "Adwoa loves Carrie". It is one of several mix tapes Holly made me for my annual pilgrimage to Nashville, TN. I didn't give any input in the cd's she just mixed them how she wanted. I am going to list the track titles because it demonstrates the qualities described above perfectly!
I can't listen to this cd without instantly becoming happy. And it always catches me off guard how happy it makes me. It's like remembering a sunny summer day in the dead of winter...just makes you happy and SILLY. I would also like to add in closing that this cd is also scratched from being played too many times.
So Holly this is dedicated to your thoughtfulness, your presence, and your silliness. I hope your boots become less heavy*
The best is yet to come,
~Adwoa
