"Challenged to Become"

This Sunday I attended the best service I have been to in Chapel Hill since moving to the area five months ago. I was visiting University Presbyterian Church because I was asked to sign up volunteers for Habitat during the lunch after service. The pre-sermon hint came during the time for children when the minister asked what does call mean? He joked that sometimes when we are called by telephone or by name we become confused and say "who? me?...you must have the wrong person". That feeling increases even more when that someone on the other end of the call is God.

The message was timely. It struck the heart of my year's journey in JIP: what are we called to do? who are we called to serve? who are we called to become?

I hope to reflect on this sermon in the weeks to come as I continue to listen for the call of God on my life.

Affirmation of Faith:
"I believe that God is present in the darkness before dawn;
in the waiting and uncertainty
where fear and courage join hands,
conflict and caring link arms,
and the sun rises over barbed wire.
I believe in a with-us God
who sits down in our midst to share our humanity.
I affirm a faith that takes me beyond the safe place:
into action, into vulnerability and into the streets.
I commit myself to work for change
and live a servant life as a disciple of Jesus Christ;
and to put myself on the line;
to bear responsibility, take risks,
live powerfully and face humiliation;
to stand with those on the edge;
to choose life and be used by the Spirit
for God's new creation bringing justice to the nations. Amen."

The best is yet to come,
