Doctor: What are you thinking Margaret?
Margaret Thatcher: Watch your thoughts for they become words.
Watch your words for they become actions.
Watch your actions for they become...habits.
Watch your habits, for they become your character.
And watch your character, for it becomes your destiny! What we think, we become.
I went to see The Iron Lady this week. And before I go further I have to give a well deserved shout out to Meryl Streep who did an incredible job acting. The movie could have been more interesting in content* like The Help (which I watched the night before and still wasn't crazy for) but my point is that Meryl did was she does best and completely became her character. Her brilliance is that she can be molded into basically anyone on the screen. You know how some actors have a character type that always seem to come through no matter what movie they are cast? For me, Meryl takes on the character fully and I am convinced that she is who she pretends to be (i.e. the character). Honest to goodness I started to forget what the real Julia Childs looked liked in "Julia and Julia" and I had to look up a picture of Margaret Thatcher to remember her face.
*While I enjoy Meryl, I can say that I typically don't love her films. Since they are so character driven they tend to be slow developing films. Not all but many that I've seen (ex: Sophie's Choice, Doubt, Postcards from the Edge, Sophie's Choice--sorry Kevin Kline it was just sooo long). If there is another strong lead in the film it spruces things up a bit (ex: Devil Wears Prada, Out of Africa)
These are just my two cents. I mainly wrote to share the quote at the beginning because I think it says roots back to a concept I agree with, that what you do on the inside (internal processes) metaphorically and literally, determines how you act on the outside (external behaviors).
It's almost Frriiiday! Enjoy the "rest" of the week before we have to spring our clocks forward.
The best is yet to come,
